Cold winds from eastern Europe brought unusually low temperatures to the Costa Del Sol . On the nights of the 26th/27th and 27th/28th January air temperatures at Malaga Airport plunged to 1 Celsius. Ice formed on freshwater ponds, but the very low humidity ensured that most roads stayed ice-free.

Clear blue skies prevailed in Malaga, helping to lift daytime temperatures close to 10 Celsius (50F), but along the coast at Motril snow fell. Snow also fell on the higher ground between Malaga and Antequera, and this led to traffic disruption for a while.

Frost is not uncommon in some of the inland valleys during the winter months, but the minus 10 Celsius (14F) recorded at Granada Airport is unusually harsh for this notoriously frosty location.
