Weather in Malaga during August 2010
Often humid with unpleasantly warm nights. A short, but rare, unsettled spell during the third week.
Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during August 2010 in Malaga was 30.2 Celsius (86F), and that was close to the normal for the time of year.  The average minimum temperature was 23.8 Celsius (75F), and that was about 2 degrees Celsius (3.5F) above the normal August value.

The highest temperature recorded  during the month was 38.6 Celsius (101F) on the 24th, but there were only 4 other days when the temperature exceeded 31 Celsius (88F). The high on the 12th was 35.2 Celsius (95F) with 36.4 Celsius (97F) recorded on the 28th. The maximum temperature only failed to reach 28 Celsius (82F) on 3 occasions. The lowest value was 27.3 Celsius (81F) on the 5th, the coolest day of the month.

All nights during August were warm, and most were uncomfortably humid. Generally, overnight temperatures were  23 or 24 Celsius (73-75F) but on 4 nights minima stayed above 25 Celsius (77F). The warmest nights were the 3 consecutive nights beginning on the 11th/12th, and the night of the 23rd/24th, the warmest of the month with a minimun of 26.7 Celsius (80F). There were only 2 nights when the temperature fell below 22 Celsius (72F), the night of the 17th/18th, and on the following, the coolest of the month, with a low of 21.6 Celsius (71F). 

Sea temperatures were 25 Celsius (77F) through most of the month, but briefly rising to 26 Celsius (79F) during the last week of August.


Rain

The total rainfall during August was 6.9 millimetres (0.3 ins), and this was the first measurable rain in August for 4 years, and the largest amount in the area during August for 14 years.

The only measurable rain of the month occurred as a developing thunderstorm moved north in the early hours of the 19th. The same storm gave over 23 millimetres (0.9 ins) of rain at Maaga Airport. 

Across southern Spain, August rainfall was variable due to some unusually fierce storms that occurred during the third week, including one that produced severe flash flooding and loss of life at Aguilar de la Frontera (between Cordoba and Antequera)  on the 17th http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvS2ni-nACw&feature=related. The Table below shows the total rainfall for the month at selected sites, and as a percentage of the long-term average; and also  the number of days with rain falling, plus the average.

Thunder

In an unusually thundery August, there were several thunderstorms reported in southern Spain during the third week. In Malaga, thunder was heard late on the evening of the 17th, with a more violent thunderstorm occurring in the early hours of the 19th.

Wind

Winds were mostly light or gentle, predominantly from between south and southeast by day but often falling calm or light northwesterly overnight. However, on the persistently very warm days, a moderate, occasionally fresh, northwest wind prevailed, and on vthe 12th a gust of 26 knots (30mph) occurred.

Fog

No fog was reported..
