Dry and warm with several exceptionally warm days
Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during November 2009 in Malaga was 21.5 Celsius (71F), and that was over 2 degrees (3.5F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 13.8 Celsius (57F), which was almost 2 degrees above the normal November value.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 27.3 Celsius (81F) on the 16th, but maxima also exceeded 26 Celsius (79F) on the 2nd, 3rd and 11th. After the 17th, the temperature failed to rise above 22 Celsius (72F) and the end of the month was decidedly chilly. The highest temperatures on the 29th and 30th were 15.9 and 15.4 Celsius (60F) respectively.
There were several fairly warm nights during the first week, and on the night of the 1st/2nd the lowest temperature was 17.8 Celsius (64F). The night of the 3rd/4th was only 0.1 Celsius cooler. The overnight minimum was 16 Celsius (61F), or higher, on 5 out of the first 7 nights, but the night of the 17th/18th was the only other night when 16 was reached. Most lows were between 12 and 15 Celsius (54-59F) but 10.2 Celsius (50F) was recorded on the 12th/13th, 9.7 Celsius (50F) on the 23rd/24th; and the following night (24th/25th) was the coolest night of the month with a minimum of 9.2 Celsius (49F).
Sea temperatures were 19 Celsius (66F) until the beginning of the second week, but then fell to 17 Celsius (63F) for the remainder of November, except the last day when a further dip to 16 Celsius (61F) occurred.
Rain
The total rainfall during November was 19.3 millimetres (0.76 ins.), and this was only around 25% of the long-term average. Measurable rain was recorded on 7 days, and that was 1 fewer than normal. Heavy dew and sea mist contributed 0.3 millimetres (0.01 ins.) to the total on both the 13th and 14th, with the first rain of the month falling on the 19th. Although the remainder of the month was rather unsettled, amounts of rain were generally small. The exception was the 29th when an active cold front produced 12.7 millimetres (0.5 ins.) of rain.
Across southern Spain, November was a dry, or very dry, month with most of the rain falling on the 29th. The table below shows the total rainfall for the month, and as a percentage of the long-term average; and also the number of days with rain falling, plus the average.
Thunder
No reports of thunder were received.
Wind
Winds were mostly light or gentle, predominantly from the northwest, but occasionally from the southeast during the afternoons, mainly during the first 3 weeks. Fresh or strong northwesterly winds occurred on the 4th and 5th with a gust of 32 knots ((37mph) occurring early on the 5th. An interesting wind event occurred on the evening of the 7th. A 'dry' cold front passed south across southern Spain and although the front was largely ignored on synoptic charts, it brought a marked wind veer and locally very strong winds. At Almeria Airport a full-blown gale occurred with gusts of 53 knots (over 60mph) recorded. This produced sandstorms for a while. Further west, although Malaga was largely unaffected by strong winds, upper-air soundings from Gibraltar suggested steady winds of 35 knots at 1000 metres AMSL, and a high likelihood of squally winds to the lee of mountains. This was probably the cause of local damage to buildings in parts of Benalmadena.
Fog
Sea fog, dense at times horizontally, but of little vertical extent, occurred on the 13th.
