Weather in Malaga during July 2009
Extremely dry with an unusually high number of hot days.
Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during July 2009 in Malaga was 30.6 Celsius (87F), and that was nearly 1 Celsius (1.8F) above normal for the time of year.  The average minimum temperature was 21.3 Celsius (70F), which was very slightly below the normal July  value.

The highest temperature recorded  during the month was 40.5 Celsius (105F) on the 24th. This was the highest July temperature in this part of Malaga for 15 years. There were 4 other days when maxima exceeded 38 Celsius (100F), including 3 consecutive days beginning on the 3rd. A further 3 days had temperatures above 35 Celsius (95F). Several pleasantly cool days occurred with maxima below 26 Celsius (79F), but with only 1 of the 6 cooler days appearing after mid month. The chilliest days were the 1st and 10th when the temperature failed to rise above 23.7 Celsius (75F).

There were many warm nights during July, more especially after mid month, although the 2 warmest nights occurred during the first week. On the night of the 4th/5th the minimum was 26.0 Celsius (79F), with the following night only 1 degree Celsius cooler. There were 7 nights when the temperature fell below 20 Celsius (68F), with all these cooler nights occurring during the first fortnight of July. The minima were above 18 Celsius (64F), except on the night of the 7th/8th,  when a low of 16.6 Celsius (62F) was recorded.

Sea temperatures hovered around 19 Celsius (66F) early in the month, but a further upwelling of cold water (see http://www.malaga-weather.com/article.712.html ) at the end of the first week led to values as low as 16 Celsius. The temperature then slowly recovered to around 19 Celsius (66F) by the end of the second week, rising to 21 Celsius (70F) at the beginning of the fourth week, and to a much more pleasant 23 Celsius (73F) at the end of the month.

Rain

No rain fell in the Malaga area during July.

Across southern Spain,  July was a very dry month, with a few spots of drizzle early on the 23rd around Seville being the only noticeable precipitation. The table below shows the total rainfall for the month, and as a percentage of the long-term average; and also  the number of days with rain falling, plus the average.

Thunder

No thunder was reported.

Wind

Gentle or moderate northwesterly winds were responsible for the hot days early in the month and during the fourth week. Otherwise the usual sequence of summer breezes prevailed. A light northwesterly wind gave way to a light or gentle southeasterly sea breeze during the late morning.  This breeze persisted through the afternoon  before dying away around sunset. A light northwesterly wind then developed overnight. A few timing differences occurred, and there were occasional gusty winds as directions changed. Around dawn on the 18th, a sudden squall occurred as very warm northwesterly winds were replaced by much cooler southeasterlies. A gust of 37 knots (42mph) occurred, but although patio furniture was left in disarray the strong winds were very short-lived.

Fog

Sea fog affected the beach for much of the morning on the 1st.
