A trip to ... Merida

Merida, the Capital of the Autonomous Community of Extremadura, in western Spain, is far from the tourist traps, but boasts one of the largest collections of Roman ruins outside of Italy. The small size of the City, less than 60,000 inhabitants, allows a relatively easy exploration of the historical sites. There are plenty of other towns in the area that are steeped in history, including Trujllo; and the more modern, but still attractive, town of Zafra.
