Weather in Malaga during September 2008

Cool with several heavy downpours.

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during September 2008 in Malaga was 26.0 Celsius (79F), and that was 2 degrees Celsius (3.6F) below normal for the time of year.  The average minimum was 20.3 Celsius (68F), a value around 1 Celsius (1.8F.) above normal. 

The highest temperature recorded  during the month was only 30.5 Celsius (87F). This occurred on the 12th,  but there were 2 other days, the 1st and 6th, when the temperature rose above 30 Celsius  There were several relatively cool days during September, and after the 12th, maxima only reached 25 Celsius (77F) on 7 occasions. On 5 days between the 23rd and 29th, the temperature failed to rise above 22 Celsius (72F), and on the 23rd the high was only 21.0 Celsius (70F). 

As usual, there were several warm and uncomfortable nights during September, especially during the first week. There were 5 nights when the temperature failed to fall below 22 Celsius (72F), including the opening night of the month when the minimum was 23.9 Celsius (75F).  Over half the nightly minima during September were between 19 and 20 Celsius (66-68F), and there were only 2 nights  when the temperature fell below 18 Celsius (64F). The coolest night was the last night of the month with a low of 17.3 Celsius (63F.). 

Sea temperatures were around 23 Celsius (73F) during the first 9 days, but during the remainder of the month values were mainly 20 or 21 Celsius. 

Rain

This was a very wet September with nearly 73mm (2.9ins) of rain falling. A figure that is over 4 times the monthly average. Measurable rain fell on 6 days, over 3 times the normal for September. The first heavy rain fell during storms that brushed the coast, mainly east of Fuengirola, on the 10th. A total of 23mm (0.9ins) fell, but only 11mm (0.4ins) was recorded at Malaga Airport. The remainder of the measurable rain fell between the 23rd and 29th, including 28.4mm (1.1ins) on the 23rd. Most other parts of southern Spain had a wet September.

Thunder

Thunder was reported on 3 days during September. There were spectacular storms in the latter part of the night on the 10th, especially to the east of Malaga. Slow-moving, but brief, storms developed on the morning of the 17th, mainly over the Sierra de Mijas with only a few spots of rain falling in west Malaga. The last thunderatorm of the month occurred during the evening of the 25th.
