The city of Cordoba was founded by the Romans, and it's position on the 4th longest river in Spain, Rio Guadalquivir (Arabic for 'Great Valley'), made it an ideal trading post with Rome. The City grew in in size, and after the Moors took over in the 8th Century AD, the population grew to around 500,000 making it the largest city in Europe. For nearly 2 centuries Arabs, Jews and Christians lived in harmony in this Arab part of Europe where Arabic was the common language. Alas, this acceptance of 3 cultures didn't last as first the Arab, and then the Christian, hardliners brought strife in their wake. Fortunately the vision of the 'Wise' King Alfonso X, allowed the Great Mosque to remain, and although a Cathedral was built within the confines of the Mosque, the history of this intriguing City remains for all to see.
