The sea breeze failed on Monday (4th July) and this resulted in the hottest day of the year, so far, for Malaga. The temperature at Malaga Airport rose to 38.2 Celsius (100F) during Monday as the sea breeze stubbornly refused to move more than a couple of hundred metres inland from the coast. The beaches offered relief from the heat for much of the day but the west to northwesterly land breeze eventually won over, with late afternoon temperatures on the water's edge soaring to 37 Celsius (99F).
The dry, oven-like heat persisted through the evening and for much of the night with temperatures staying above 28Celsius (82F). However, an abrupt change of wind to a southeasterly direction brought a rapid lowering of values to the Malaga area by mid morning on Tuesday (5th). Temperatures dropped to the low to mid 20s Celsius (73-77F) for a while during the morning before recovering to 28 or 29 Celsius (82-84F) through the afternoon. Although these values were many degrees lower than on the previous day, it actually felt more unpleasant, as the very high relative humidity made the smallest of outside tasks seem difficult as perspiration ran freely from every pore.
