05 Feb 2005...Hail in Malaga
The thunderstorms that affected The Costa Del Sol early on the 5th February were accompanied by hail in Malaga.
Residents of Malaga were awoken by the sound of thunder in the early hours of this morning, not an uncommon occurrence on the Costa Del Sol during the winter months. However, the rat-a-tat-tat of hail accompanying the storm was a more unusual phenomenon.
A carpet of white was observed over parts of the City as hail reached diameters of 5 to 10 mm, and damage to winter crops and plastic cloches was reported.
Although hail is fairly rare along the coast , it is unfortunately more common in the foothills of the high Sierras. In most years, some farmers in the thriving market gardens of these more temperate elevations face ruin as large hail shred their lettuces or reduces courgettes to pulp.
More welcome, from last night's storms, was the rain. This included 16 mm in just 2 hours at Malaga Airport, thus making it the wettest day of the year so far.
